A section of Interstate 220 westbound was shutdown after an 18-wheeler rolled over on Friday afternoon leaving its driver trapped inside, said Sheriff Steve Prator.

It happened just before 1 p.m. on I220 westbound at Lakeshore Drive. Multiple fire crews extracted the driver from the vehicle and  Life Air Rescue airlifted him to a nearby hospital.

The inside lane of I220 westbound will remain closed for several hours as tow trucks remove the 18-wheeler and lumber that spilled from the accident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
