A Shreveport man was arrested on Tuesday for cheating the motion picture and recording industries out of $19,000 by possessing counterfeit DVDs and CDs, said Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator.

Sheriff’s Detective Doug Smith, who is assigned to the Caddo-Shreveport Financial Crimes Task Force, arrested 57-year-old Howard Williams for counterfeiting or possessing counterfeit labels.

Shreveport Police patrol officers caught Williams with 2,441 bootleg DVDs and CDs in March when they responded to a report that Williams had been robbed while selling the merchandise on the street. Over the next several weeks, Detective Smith worked with representatives of the Motion Picture Association of America and Recording Industry Association of America to verify that the DVDs and CDs were counterfeit.

Williams was charging $1 a piece for counterfeit DVDs like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs II, Gravity, and Fast and Furious 5, and CDs by John Legend, R Kelly, and Michael Jackson. If purchased legally the industries would have profited by $19,277.24.

Williams was arrested on Tuesday at his residence at 4245 Booker T Street in Shreveport and was booked into the Caddo Correctional Center.
