A Shreveport man was arrested on Friday for stealing the retirement savings of a mentally challenged acquaintance, according Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator.

In March 2013, the 55-year-old victim sought help from Terence Carthren, whom he knew from his neighborhood, in withdrawing money from his 401k account. Carthren obtained the victim’s personal information and used it to withdraw all of the victim’s money, said investigating Sheriff’s Detective Yomeka Evans.  The victim’s retirement check for $35,750 was mailed to Carthren’s home address and later deposited into a Bank of America checking account that Carthren opened online.  Carthren also used the information to open several new lines of credit.

Carthren was already in jail at Caddo Correctional Center on unrelated charges when Evans arrested him for identity theft and theft of assets of an aged or disabled person.
